Irving school was erected in 1889 at the northeast corner of Second and
Orchard streets to serve the First ward. It was built by George B. Wood.
Irving was demolished after Eugene Field school was built. The building
is shown on the 1915 Sanborn Fire Insurance map.
It was reported in 1922 that the Irving school would be discontinued and that
the students would attend the Eugene Field school in the northeast part of
Carthage. Overcrowded conditions forced the district to reopen the Irving
School building in September 1922. Petitions were signed asking for the
Irving building to be repaired and used for the first, second and third grade pupils.
The Irving school building was used until 1934, having served the community
for forty-five years.
