Group of school teachers at the normal institute held at the Carthage High school for
a two week period beginning in the latter part of May, 1896. The institute was a Jasper
County institute and was said by The Press to have been the best in the state. Some
of the teachers from down-the-line towns went back and forth daily on the interurban
electric line, but most apparently found rooms in Carthage for the period. The picture
is now the property of Otto Johnson whose sister was one of the group. It was owned
by a cousin, DeWitt Johnson who died in Fort Scott about a year ago and after his death
relatives sent it to the Carthage man. The photograph was made by E. E. Roessler,
Carthage photographer.

Note: This building does not resemble the Carthage High School building (Central
School) of 1896. It may have been taken at the Carthage Collegiate Institute, possibly
the back of the building.
