Union Valley school was originally called "Coon Creek School". It
opened east of Jasper about 1869.
"Coon Creek, Union Valley School, two miles east of Midway (later
Jasper City), sub-district No. 1, Township 30, Range 30, John Weed
teacher, wages $40. Here I found a good school, good house, good
desks, good blackboard, plenty of chalk and directors not afraid to have
it used. Appearance of pupils good, clean, springhtly and intelligent;
recitations good. Weed is a good teacher. His pupils love him and the
district appreciates his labors." Jasper County Supt. U. B. Webster.

Union Valley District
W. H. Rhoads, George F. Bowers and Isaac Hendrlcks, directors; A. R. Haughawout, teacher.
Term of four months began Oct. 28th. District enumeration 72, enrollment over fifteen years of
age, total 46, present 43. Building and furniture second-class. Seating capacity 44. The policy
of the directors has been to pay the best wages and employ the best teachers, and they have
thereby given the district a school that in point of advancement and thoroughness, ranks with
the first district schools of the county. Mr. Haughawout is teaching his fifth term, and is doing good
work, especially with the "little ones" (who are too often neglected) in primary reading and mental
arithmetic. Any teacher not in possession of good methods in primary work would do well to witness
the exercises of this school.

The proposition to issue $800 bonds for a new school house which was voted
on in the Union Valley district 2 miles out of town was carried by a vote of 8 to
3. The school house will probably be built during the summer.

The school board of the Union Valley school distric two miles east of this
city have advertized for bids for the erection of their new school building
which was voted on at the last election.
The building will be 24 x 36 feet and the bids will be opened Aug. 5. They
expect to have the new building ready for school by October.

The School Board of Union Valley, on District No. 1, Township 30 and
Range 30, Jasper County, Mo., will sell the old school house to the highest
bidder for cash at 2 o'clock p.m. Saturday, October 10, 1903.
