School record dated April 1870. Board organized and appointed C. S. Tortwood,
clerk with William Cooley as chairman. Other business: Hired H. B. Jackson to
haul lumber for a school house in Smtf. District No. 5, from Columbus, Kansas,
this being the nearest point to the railroad. Agreed to pay four dollars per day for
him and his team.
Estimate of school expenses: For purchase of school furniture, 100.00

The board agreed to employ William H. Timberlake as a teacher for a term of
three and a half months commencing the 18th day of September 1871 for the
sum of $40.00 per month.
Smithfield District
David Hopkins, W. M. Temple and John R. Walters, directors, T. A. Stockslager, teacher. Term of
six months began September 2nd. District enumeration 104, enrollment over fifteen years of age 10,
total 67, present 31. Building second-class and furniture second and third-class. Seating capacity 32.
This school contains wide-awake pupils, earnestly at work and respectful to their teacher who in turn
treated them with merited kindness.

The Smithfield school burned about 1951 or 1952. The building and land was purchased by
Elmer DeGraff. He removed the top story of the building and used the brick walls of the
schoolhouse to construct a house. The house stood until 2003 when it was destroyed by a tornado.
The school was located on the northwest corner of County Road 303 and Hunter Road.
